The Mini Marlin turned out to be one of the most deceptive and difficult projects I’ve ever worked on — and I think it fooled everyone, including the factories.
A lot of factories prefer fixed blades because they’re much easier to make than folders. The factories I work with kept encouraging me to design more fixed blades, so I came up with the Mini Marlin. They were excited to produce it, and I assumed it would be a quick, straightforward project.
I was wrong.
The blade design — with a hollow grind on the front and a flat grind on the back — turned out to be extremely difficult. Getting clean, consistent grind lines was a major challenge. One entire batch was completely scrapped. The factory even asked to charge me double the original quote. What was supposed to take three months ended up taking a full year.
Another factory thought the issues were just due to poor execution and wanted to try making it themselves — but they eventually gave up too. The original factory no longer wants to produce it again.
So this batch may be the only Mini Marlin run ever made.
