Awesome blade! Feels good in the hand

  1. This particular knife the MT3DP is my first OTF knife. After investigating different brands and styles I decided to give Tacknives a try. This product is most satisfactory in all of the things important to me such as build quality, material quality, price point, and functionality. This will not be my only knife from their product lineup!!

  4. The finish is a very nice, satin black anodized coat. It’s nice and smooth, and very even. The coating on the blade is quite good, very even, very attractive addition to the knife.
The pocket clip is really, really good. Tension is just about perfect for carrying in a pocket. And the curves lend themselves really well as grip points for my fingers in left hand, and create NO hotspots where it’s uncomfortable in my right hand.
The action is nice and smooth. If you are slowly pushing the actuator to test it, it slides smoothly up, stages just slightly, then hits a wall. No effort to push through the wall, and then the blade deploys. If you are just firing it normally, it feels really good.
The texturing on the button is not overly aggressive, and doesn’t have any sharp edges. However. If you are “fidgeting” this knife (just firing it repeatedly, giving your hands something to do) the stepping on the button is a bit too deep. Which will give you some soreness in your thumb.
The pressure required to move the switch, out of the box, is fairly average for a mid-range price OTF knife. Not too hard, not too soft. I can easily manipulate the action with the bottom, or side, of my thumb. And no worry about it accidentally going off from being too soft. I will probably end up putting a touch of Rem-Oil in the action to help remove a bit more of the pressure needed to work the action.
The size and weight. She’s a bit on the heavy side. I could carry this around all day in my pocket with jeans or slacks, or camies. Any kind of pants with a belt. Shorts, sweats, or other drawstring pants, I don’t think so.
Action: The blade extends and retracts smoothly, fluidly, and with no malfunctions. I’ve got at least 400 deploys on this one so far, and no failures of any kind. The firing is swift, and solid, as is the retraction. There is however, some noticeable, audible spring twang. Which, is easily remedied by applying some white grease to the spring. There are all kinds of videos on youtube on how to do this. Just search “Fix otf spring noise” on youtube. AND, Tac will not void your warranty for taking your knife apart.
The blade: Visually, the blade is very attractive. The black coating really makes the lines of this blade pop out. Especially with the non-sharpened bevel along the top to the tip. The hollow-grind (oh I love those!) bevels are nice and clean, very even and very straight. The coating fully fills all the grinding lines, left by grinder.
Sharpness: Ok, this fooled me at first. I can run my finger down the line of the sharp edge, with some pressure. And it will not cut me. I thumbed the edge, trying to find the burr, and could not. This, at first led me to believe the cutting edge was dull or slightly rolled. But… she CUTS. I haven’t taken it to wood, or anything really substantial yet, but she feathers paper and even mild layer cardboard with satisfaction. She goes through plastic bags with ease. And as a letter opener, she’s a pro. (Sorry, we’re getting hit with hard snow this week, so I haven’t had a chance to get out to hit some harder stuff yet)
The one complaint that I have about the blade, is that there are some squared, sharp edges along the backstrap. Right where your thumb goes, if you are really baring down to leverage the blade through something tough. Some time with a file and some sandpaper will take this away.

In finishing: My only two complaints are the deep stepping on the actuator, and the edges on the backstrap of the blade. Other than that, this would make an awesome “show it off” knife. Workhorse knife, and gift to friends/relatives. But if you’re getting an OTF knife for fidget factor, the stepping on that actuator kinda throws her out of that particular category.
